Understanding Standard and Secure Conversations

There are two modes of communicating with patients on Spruce: Standard and Secure. Standard Conversations

Standard Patient Conversations enable you to you send standard email and SMS messages to patients without requiring them to download an app. All emails, SMS messages and calls from a patient to your Spruce Number and/or Email will appear in the patient's Standard Conversation.

Secure conversations are HIPAA compliant and enable you to engage in more advanced forms of digital care by requiring the patient to download the patient-facing mobile Spruce app.

When to use a Standard Conversation

Use a Standard Conversations when you want to communicate with someone via SMS or email. For patients, SMS or email messages you send through Spruce will appear in their regular text message app or email client.

Make sure you have patient consent before using standard communication channels with your patients.

When to use a Secure Conversation

Use Secure Conversations to securely message protected health information (PHI) or to engage in more advanced forms of digital care — namely video visits, Spruce Visits, care plans, and mobile bill pay.

When you create a new Secure Conversation, patients are invited to download the Spruce app and join your practice and all communication with the patient occurs through the Spruce app.
