Starting a New Patient Conversation

Introduction to patient conversations

All communication on Spruce lives inside of a conversation. There are a few types of conversations: team conversations are internal-only, involving teammates in clinics; standard conversations are patient-facing and use communication channels like phone, email, and SMS text messaging; and secure conversations are patient-facing and contained fully within the Spruce app.

When starting a new conversation with a patient, you'll be asked to select standard or secure.

Only secure conversations are HIPAA-compliant and require the patient to download the Spruce app. Use secure conversations to safely discuss medical information, share PHI, and engage in digital care (like video calling, Spruce Visits, care plans, and mobile bill pay).

Use standard conversations when you want to communicate with someone via SMS text messaging or email. For patients, SMS or email messages you send through Spruce will appear in their regular text message app or email client. We recommend you obtain patient consent before using standard communication channels to discuss health information with your patients.
